Streamlining Selectmen meetings? The public's not the problem...

At last Thursday's Selectmen meeting, the vast majority of discussion was not by citizens asking questions. The meeting was not lengthened because citizens expressed disagreement with Selectboard decisions. Really it wasn't.

It was long because of one issue on the table: the Town Planner job description. It began about 7:30 and like the energizer bunny, it kept going and going ......past 8:40.

The discussion went on and on and culminated in yet another meeting that was scheduled to be held this morning April 6th with one or two Selectmen and Land use Offices members.

So now the Selectmen want to reduce public interference ( oops I mean"input") in order to" work on the towns business uninterrupted".
Well here's some ideas to move things along: limit these long winded discussions to 10 minutes like you are planning to impose on your "less privileged" citizens. And be prepared: read your weekly packet BEFORE the meeting! Just as the public must have correspondence in by close of business the Friday before the meeting, so should other boards and committees have a deadline so the BoS has time to review it. And Madame Chairperson, when someone makes a motion and it is seconded you should call for a vote, not suppress it. If you don't agree do something you rarely do: vote no.

And by the way, what is the deal with this job description? It's not the first Town Planner ever hired in New Hampshire..wrap it up already!

I've sat through a number of these long winded sessions, they make a decision and then they come back the next week and change their minds, probably because they actualy thought about it. It doesn't seem to me to be a big deal to meet once a week for an hour and a half. How much more streamlined do they want?
