Dearborn, Michigan: "No Go" Zone? Not so.

There is a widespread claim ( for a number of years now) that there are cities in the United States and Europe with areas considered "no-go zones" operating under Sharia Law where local laws are not applicable, and even local police will not dare to ventureDearborn, Michigan is rumored to be one such city. Dearborn in particular has been targeted  because of it's historically large Arab population. How accurate are these claims?
In my research on line it is clear that these claims are widely touted by many sources, often using the same source material. It is equally clear that the claims are completely false and have been discredited by numerous sources.
According to Wikipedia "The city's (Dearborn) population includes 40,000 Arab Americans.[18] Arab Americans own many shops and businesses, offering services in both English and Arabic.[19] In the 2010 census, Arab Americans comprised 40% of Dearborn's population; many are from families who have been in the city since the early 20th century. The city has the largest proportion of Arab Americans in the United States.[20] As of 2006 Dearborn has the largest Lebanese American population in the United States.[21]
The first Arab immigrants came in the early-to-mid-20th century to work in the automotive industry and were chiefly Lebanese Christians(Maronites). Other immigrants from the Mideast in the early twentieth century included a large Armenian community, who are also Christian. Assyrians/Chaldeans/Syriacs have also immigrated to the area. Since then, Arab immigrants from YemenIraq and the Palestine territories, most of whom are Muslim, have joined them. Lebanese Americans comprise the largest group of ethnic Arabs.[22][23]The Arab Muslim community has built the Islamic Center of America, the largest mosque in North America,[24] and the Dearborn Mosque. More Iraqi refugees have come, fleeing the continued war in their country since 2003.
Warren Avenue has the commercial center of the Arab-American community. The Arab American National Museum is located in Dearborn.[25] The museum was opened in January 2005 to celebrate the Arab American community's history, culture and contributions to the United States.
The Baptist Press  in February of this year correctly calls these rumors "yellow journalism" , meant only to sensationalize and increase readership. "Contrary to news reports dating to as early as 2010, Dearborn is not under Sharia law, a strict -- and sometimes tortuous -- theocratic form of civil and criminal law based on the Quran, Southern Baptist pastors in the Detroit suburb of about 100,000 say."
Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly, who was born in Dearborn and raised his Catholic children there in a 2013 press release stated "Dearborn is not under sharia law and has never at any time even considered such an action.... One unique aspect of our community is the strong working relationship that exists among our diverse faith leaders, who foster understanding and tolerance."
An example of this spread of misinformation can be found in Conservative News and Views wherein they talk of 751 "“Sensitive Urban Zones” where the police dare not go on patrol" across FranceIt would appear that no one at Conservative News and Views is familiar with the French term  zones urbaines sensibles or ZUS. There are indeed 751 of these " zones" in France, but according to The Public Slate  in January of this year "... they are areas of urban renewal, set aside by the French government (not a Muslim police force) for clean up and extra monitoring from police to drive down crime levels. They are not specifically Muslim, nor are they usually extremely violent. According to conservative news source Breitbart, the level of violence in any of these areas varies considerably, and “some of them have been rehabilitated, some are poor but non-violent, and some are poor and occasionally violent,”
An article in the Detroit News in February of this year was entitled: "You'll find ham and liquor in Dearborn — but no Shariah"  In that same article Mayor O'Reilly was quoted as saying "There are those who actually feel threatened by what they don't know and understand," says O'Reilly, whose job description has come to include playing Whac-A-Mole with the latest angry allegation. Then there are others who exploit it because it provides a revenue stream."
For a humorous point of view, Brian Stone a Dearborn native and US Navy Veteran and Al Joliff a US Army veteran went around Dearborn and took these pictures (with the warning that the photos contained bacon.)
The following closing paragraph in the article in Public Slate, sums it up best: "... the fact of the matter is that these supposed “no-go zones” are not what you think. They are not pockets of lawlessness dominated by Muslims intent on making the whole word part of Sharia law. They are not the entire city of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, Dearborn, Michigan (another maligned city) and they are not basically war-torn Afghanistan and Iraq in a European setting. What the story is is untrue and extremely scary, making it little more than a ploy used by those who would have people be scared. "
So in the end, this is a cautionary tale. Have we forgotten that the United States is a melting pot? Many of us are descendants of immigrants, some like myself from just a few generations ago. Go to any big city and you will see enclaves of very distinct cultures with signs in many different languages, including Arabic. This diversity is what makes us great and should not be used as an excuse to tear us apart.
It seems to me that Dearborn Michigan is a city to be envied, not maligned. They got it right. Lets leave them be and focus on fighting the real enemy.

There is so much misinformation in all media these day that is always wise to check the source. Many do not and we end up with nonsense like the dearborne story. Scary is that many people will think it is still true despite all the evidence to the contrary becasue all the conservative "news" sez its so.

While I respect and even agree with your perspective on some of our nation's macro societal issues such as excessive mandatory prison terms for mid-level and ring leader drug dealing and now excessive potential profiling of any ethnic group...I am starting to wonder why these topics are the lead in a Moultonborough NH town blog? While you have indicated unfortunate up close experience with the drug sentencing debate, the country's immigration policies and long established American communities should not be blurred with the real life threat that medieval murderers are potentially bringing to foreign shores as I type. With the exception of those who greeted all of our immigrant ancestors, this country has been a melting pot and should remain so...just think that while in the midst of our politically correct phase of the moon, we had better reserve the right to isolate, prosecute and eliminate those who openly plot and act to eradicate us and our allies from the face of the Earth.
PS. Will this discussion influence the extra sidewalks or gym decisions?

"Origins: On 28 October 2013, the National Report published an article positing Dearborn, Michigan (a city with a historically large Muslim population), had become the first U.S. city to implement Sharia law:"

"National Report is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within National Report are fiction, and presumably fake news. Any resemblance to the truth is purely coincidental."

Maybe, gullibility, naïveté, are the real culprits growing in/on our society.

The politically elite banter about their views, and mock those that do not share those views, and those views are taken as dogma; intention or no intention, notwithstanding. Many believe?

We have folks in town that still spew that SB-2 does away with Town Meetings; "MoBo law," as valid as "Sharia law" in Dear Born (sic) ... God said brain ... they thought train ... I'll take the next one :)

Be careful....the liberal media certainly has their own poor track record of inaccurate news....tilted of course to their point of view. So do not throw rocks at the conservatives. Media in general are not as accurate or unbiased as many of us would like.

Yes, question the Conservative News, or the Liberal news....

Good advice - check your sources. Question the "Facts", be they from the Huffington Post, Dan Rather, Bill O'Reilly, Hillary Clinton, Al Sharpton or Bagdad Bob.

Don't kid yourself, radical Islam is alive and well in the good old USA.

April 20, 2015
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Six people were arrested Sunday in connection with a terrorism investigation in Minnesota, where authorities have been tracking youths who have traveled or tried to travel to Syria to fight with militants, including the Islamic State group, authorities said.

Since 2007, more than 22 young Somali men have also traveled from Minnesota to Somalia to join the terrorist group al-Shabab.

Dear anon at 8:04am- I have no doubt that radical Islam is alive and well in the USA, and I respect your opinion, but it is a far cry to equating that to cities overtaken by Sharia law. There are many radical elements in our society. No one is suggesting that there in no danger in the USA from radical muslims. I only discredit the false reporting such as the Dearborn stories which in no way helps combat the real enemies of our nation.

As a NH director and spokesperson for “Muslims for liberty”, I must say, I am impressed with the open mindedness of the author and general trend of the shire inhabitants. It is my obligation to tell my fellow Americans that, Muslims in America are less than 1% of the entire population (approximately 0.7%). Furthermore, Muslims then are further subdivided into denominations such as Baptists, Catholics etc. What this means is that the values and teachings of one denomination does not apply to the other denomination just as Catholicism doesn't apply to Protestants. This is precisely why, even if the sharia law represented by a bogey man appears to be a threat to American legal system, it is impossible to implement because of the Muslims minority in our country, demographics throughout the nation and subdivision of ethnicity as well as denominations (sects) amongst them. The only place where a forced sharia is possible at all is where governments are run by oligarchs like evil Saudi's and evil Taliban of Afghanistan prior to American invasion, where anything is possible at a barrel of a gun. To an average Muslim American, the everyday sharia is “though shall not kill, steal, lie, cheat, deceive” etc. There is no such thing as a “Muslim terrorist”. Terrorist is just a terrorist, just as, a thief is just a thief and a murderer is just a murderer and not a Christian thief or a Jewish murderer. Every American Muslim take pride in our American culture and values and every day we are determined to expose the ill minded individuals amongst us, the minute we will come across them. We endorse non-aggression principal. Thank you for your article and peace to you all

Thank you for posting this.
All news IS local.
But where local folks obtain their information comes from varying sources and varying places.

Thank you again for posting facts.

Opinions are fine - if they are stated so. But opinions are not facts. And too many reading here confuse such.

This is only the first round. Muslims will not stop until Sharia law is accepted in America's courts.

August 15, 2013
A federal judge prohibited Oklahoma officials from certifying the results of a 2010 statewide election that approved a constitutional amendment to prohibit state courts from considering international or Islamic law when deciding cases.

U.S. District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange permanently enjoined the State Election Board and its secretary, Paul Ziriax, from certifying results of the vote in which State Question 755 was approved by Oklahoma voters. The measure was passed with 70 percent of the vote on Nov. 2, 2010.

Muneer Awad, former executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Oklahoma, challenged the constitutional amendment in a lawsuit that claimed it would stigmatize his religion and would invalidate his will, which he said is partially based on Islamic Law, also known as Sharia Law.

CAIR's current executive director, Adam Soltani, said the decision reinforces a ruling Miles-LaGrange almost three years ago in which she approved a temporary restraining order barring certification of the election's results. That decision was later upheld by the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver.

To Goshe King : When a Muslim doctor and self-identified "Soldier of Allah" murders thirteen US Army members (fourteen if one counts the dead woman's unborn baby) while shouting "Allahu Akbar", that's a "Muslim terrorist". Denying the truth does little to buttress your credibility.

Anonymous said...

Mr. Jatko, horrendoous acts have been committed in the name of all faiths. Right now Islam has been hijacked by ignorant radicals which are still very small minority of worldwide Muslims.

NO Excuse said...

Dear Anonymous 4:41, that very "small minority" of "radical Muslims" control a large area of the Middle East. They have killed, mutilated and tortured thousands of innocent people. Least you've forgotten twelve (just 12) Arab men killed 3000 innocent people on Sept. 11, 2001.

The killings started long before 911 and continues. Meanwhile the Muslim population is largely silent.

For those of you living in the "can't we all just get along?" bubble, some sobering data:

No one denies that atrocities have been committed by other faiths in the past, the current threat in quite obvious.

The Crusades killed up to 3 million. Do we condemn all Christians?
Oh, that was a long time ago.

We have candidates today running for president that wish to place Christian laws paramount to US law. Where is this outrage there?

Deja Vu said...

"So what is the truth about the Crusades? Scholars are still working some of that out. But much can already be said with certainty. For starters, the Crusades to the East were in every way defensive wars. They were a direct response to Muslim aggression — an attempt to turn back or defend against Muslim conquests of Christian lands."

"That is what gave birth to the Crusades. They were not the brainchild of an ambitious pope or rapacious knights but a response to more than four centuries of conquests in which Muslims had already captured two-thirds of the old Christian world. At some point, Christianity as a faith and a culture had to defend itself or be subsumed by Islam. The Crusades were that defense."

Ibn Khaldun (d. 1406), who declared, "In the Muslim community, the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the [Muslim] mission and [the obligation to] convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force." (See: Robert Conquest's, Reflections on a Ravaged Century, reviewed at: http://victorhanson.com/articles/thornton100406.html).

There are some in this country that are religious fanatics and religious fruitcakes.
That is all fine.
Just keep it to yourself.

I don't want no government run by Muslim Law or no government run by Christian Law.

Leave your religion at home and at your place of worship.

One thumbs up to Micah 4:3-5. Leave it at home and don't attribute the acts of a few to entire religions.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was recently convicted for killing 3 people and injuring over 200 in the horrific Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013.

Outrageous and all on the Taxpayer's Dime said...

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) — The family of the convicted marathon bomber is in America, on your tax dollars, and survivors are outraged after learning the news.
As of Thursday, family members of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev have been staying at the Hampton Inn in Revere under very tight security, just one of the things tax dollars are paying for. FOX25’s Sharman Sacchetti investigated how much this trip is costing you.

Sources say these family members are being called as witnesses and not only that, at least three agencies are working around the clock to protect and transport them. This is all part of the defense team’s strategy to save Tsarnaev. While it’s unclear when their flight started, we know the last part of it came through Amsterdam and landed at Logan Airport and cost nearly $2,500 per person.

The cost to put them up at the Hampton Inn at the government rate: almost $200 per night, per person. And a source says at least three agencies, the FBI, US Marshal’s and Revere Police are involved in constant protection.
“I think you’re probably talking about $100,000 plus in that neighborhood in terms of security and out of pocket costs associated with travel,” former US attorney Michael Sullivan said.
And that’s just for this trip.

Lawyer fees or even what all witnesses during the trial cost is still unclear. One defense witness, Mark Spencer of Arsenal Consulting, charged $375 per hour and billing taxpayers for $150,000.
