According to this Politico article written by Paul H. Jossey, who worked for one of the Tea Party PAC’s (Political Action Committees): “POLITICO last year reviewed the activity of 33 conservative PACs for the 2014 cycle. Combined, they raked in $43 million dollars, according to the POLITICO report. Of that, $39.5 million went to overhead including $6 million to entities owned by PAC operators; candidates got $3 million. Another report analyzed 17 conservative PACs from the 2014 midterm. It came up with different numbers than POLITICO, finding that the bottom 10 PACs in terms of the ratio of spending to actual candidate support received $54,318,498 and spent only $3,621,896 supporting candidates.”
Jenny Beth Martin is the co-founder and national coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots. That one group in 2014 raised $14.4 million for support of candidates, but spent only 10% of it for that purpose. Ms.Martin earns $15,000 per month and all told $450,000 annually for her Tea Party work.
Reading through the story, it is absolutely astonishing that perhaps 100’s of thousands of well intentioned American’s were duped into contributions they thought were helping like-minded candidates, but were actually lining the coffers of “ consultants” and vendors.
The article closes in part with the following sobering comment: “In sad irony, the Tea Party was
hijacked by those who mirrored its critique of government: bloated, inefficient and looking out only for themselves.”
