The Public School Advantage: Why Public Schools Outperform Private Schools

Occaisionally, my Kindle advertises some interesting titles that I download and save for reading at a later date. This one caught my attention and I finally got around to reading it.  It was well worth it.

According to the authors: "They make the assumption that moving kids from public to private is going to help them, but actually our data and some of the more recent voucher studies suggest the opposite—that it actually has a harmful effect,” Christopher Lubienski, a researcher with Indiana University.
The Public School Advantage: Why Public Schools Outperform Private Schools was authored by Lubienski and his wife Sarah.

When we did the analysis, and we controlled for the fact that there tends to be more affluent parents sending their children to private schools, when you account for those demographics, that more than explains any gaps in achievement. In fact, public schools are actually more effective in teaching mathematics. This definitely turns the common wisdom on its head, and it undercuts the basic narrative we have around school reform now exemplified in Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump."
As NH is being pushed by  lawmakers who spout  ideological catch phrases to support their extreme positions, we need to assure that decisions made on the future of our public education system are based upon  fact and not ideology.  The misrepresentation that our public schools are failing and that the free- market will solve all social problems, including public educations, is more then just misguided and disingenuous, it is dangerous.
