Last time a NH Democrat won a state senate special election was February 1984. Until today that is. Kevin Cavanaugh easily won the special election for NH Senate District 16 with 55% of the vote. The election was held to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Democrat Scott McGilvray in March. They are the only two Democrats to win that seat since 1975.
Cavanaugh's opponent, David Boutin (r) , held the seat from 2010 in which he won a special election, until 2016 when he did not seek re-election.
